A new research has revealed the most celebrity news-obsessed locations, as well as crowning Taylor Swift as the most searched-for celebrity.

The study examined 955 keywords related to celebrities and gossip on Google. Search terms were generated using templates such as ‘[celebrity] + news’ and ‘[celebrity] + partner’, and combined with news sources such as ‘TMZ’.

The average monthly search figure per 100,000 residents was then calculated for each region based on data from August 2023 to August 2024. For regions with fewer than 100,000 residents, the search figures were adjusted to provide a consistent comparison.

Wakefield is the number one celebrity-obsessed location, with a rate of 10,213 searches per 100,000 residents. This figure is an impressive 80% higher than the national average (5,673 searches per 100,000 residents each month) and includes over 3,367 searches each month for ‘celebrity news’.

Wakefield’s top celebrities include Taylor Swift, Kanye West, and Meghan Markle. Across the UK, Swift is the most searched-for celebrity, with over 72,100 average monthly searches, making her the top-researched celebrity in all assessed locations.

Swansea ranks second, with a rate of 8,881 searches per 100,000 residents. Here, the most searched-for celebrities are Taylor Swift, Kanye West, and Prince Harry. Swansea’s rate is 56% higher than the national average for celebrity gossip.

Preston comes in third, with 8,723 searches per 100,000 residents. Each month, there is an average of 2,608 searches for ‘celebrity news’, with Taylor Swift generating the most searches, followed by Kanye West and Elon Musk.

Ranking fourth are the residents of Derry, with 8,449 searches per 100,000 residents.  Derry residents are very interested in celebrity gossip, with their most searched-for celebrities being Taylor Swift, Kanye West, and Elon Musk. All related searches total an average of 10,648 each month.

Next in line are Liverpool’s residents, with 8,400 searches per 100,000 people. On average, there are 42,551 searches each month for celebrity news, with Taylor Swift, Kanye West, and Prince Harry among the top names.

In sixth place is Mansfield, with 8,357 searches per 100,000 residents, followed by Hove (8,309), Rochdale (8,271), Chelmsford (7,828), and Bournemouth (7,743).

Out of the 78 UK locations assessed, Nottingham was the least interested in celebrity news, with a rate 57% below the national average, at 2,430 searches per 100,000 people.

Commenting on the findings, Hekima Yoshida, said:

“Celebrity lives are more accessible than ever through social media, and so fans and even non-fans are captivated by the glimpses of glitz and glamour in the everyday lives of big stars. Yet, it is important to remember that celebrities are human too and they deserve a right to privacy.

“The study highlights just how fascinated we are by public figures, highlighting the 2.4 million searches we make each month in the UK. These searches help keep stars relevant, and it’s interesting to see how the world’s relationship with celebrities evolves. For instance, after this year’s Met Gala, many people began unfollowing influencers, leading to stars like Kim Kardashian losing hundreds of thousands of followers. While most audiences remain captivated by celebrities still, we may be entering a new era in how we approach them and the parasocial relationships we develop with them online.

“People often search for relatability in celebrities - they want to know about their daily life, their heartbreaks, love stories, and more. But it is important to remember that celebrities are paid to maintain an image. Even when they share regular updates or when news outlets claim to reveal their ‘real’ lives, much of it is carefully curated and the whole picture is never seen. While it’s fascinating to peek into their world, it’s key to remember our own lives are just as interesting too.”
