Who Are England's Biggest Threats at Euro 2024?

As England dream of winning their first European Championships in Germany this summer, several heavyweight teams are poised to test their mettle.

England to win Euros odds have the Three Lions priced as the favourites at 3/1, but several big nations are breathing down their necks in the betting market.

Each of these teams not only boast a rich history in international football but also come equipped with a blend of experienced veterans and emerging talents capable of tilting the scales in their favour.

Let’s take a closer look at the teams that pose the biggest threats to England’s ambitions at the tournament — France, Germany, Portugal, and Spain.

France

Under the astute guidance of Didier Deschamps, Les Bleus have consistently been a formidable force in international football.

France have reached the last two World Cup finals — including winning the trophy in 2018 — and the final of Euro 2016 on home soil, which they lost to Portugal in extra-time.

With a blend of talent across every position and a squad depth that few can match, France can be a nightmare for any opponent at Euro 2024, including England.

Germany

As hosts of the European Championships, Germany have the advantage of playing on home soil, and can potentially thrive on the passionate support in every stadium.

Germany have not been much of a threat at the last few international tournaments, as they’ve exited the previous two World Cups in the group stage and were knocked out of Euro 2020 by England in the round of 16.

However, their recent victories over France and the Netherlands are a potential indication that Julian Nagelsmann has found the recipe for success after experimenting with different players and various starting XIs.

Germany’s likely squad will be a mix of experienced leaders like Manuel Neuer and Toni Kroos, combined with young talents such as Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz, making them dangerous.

Portugal

The fact that this will likely be Cristiano Ronaldo’s final appearance for Portugal at a major tournament adds an extra layer to the nation’s bid to win Euro 2024.

However, they are heading to Germany in red-hot form. Portugal were the only team to finish qualifying with a 100% record, winning all 10 of their fixtures.

Roberto Martinez’s men are by no means reliant on Ronaldo either, with quality players like Ruben Dias, Bruno Fernandez, and Rafael Leao amongst their ranks making them capable of winning another Euros.

Spain

Spain went through a major transitional period after their immense success earlier this millennium, which saw La Roja win back-to-back European Championships in 2008 and 2012, and the 2010 World Cup.

However, their recent performances in tournaments indicate that Spain are ready to compete with the big sides again, as they reached the semi-finals of the European Championships in 2020 and won the Nations League in 2023.

Luis de la Fuente’s side topped their tricky qualifying group with seven wins and a shock defeat to Scotland, and while they will be without Pedri and Gavi, should still have the quality to compete at Euro 2024 regardless of their 9/1 odds in the Euro 2024 betting
