Baldur's Gate 3 Crowned the Best Video Game for Couples to Play Together at Home

A new study has identified the best games for couples' at-home date nights, with Baldur's Gate 3 topping the list.

Experts at Clash.gg analysed multiplayer game reviews and ratings for 79 titles featuring the couch co-op feature, which allows two people to play on the same device. Each game was awarded a score out of 100 based on fan reception.

Metacritic ratings were collected across multiple platforms (e.g. PC or PlayStation 5), with games awarded a higher score if they performed consistently well across all platforms.

At number one is Baldur’s Gate 3, with a fan score of 96 out of 100. When released in 2023, the Dungeons and Dragons role-play sequel was met with critical acclaim and is deemed perfect for igniting the imagination.

Second is Portal 2, with a fan score of 95 out of 100. In this futuristic puzzle, you can support each other to overcome set challenges while practicing patience with this BAFTA-winning game.

In third place is Super Mario Bros. Wonder, with an average score of 92 out of 100 across all platforms. Couples can play through levels featuring classic characters like Princess Peach and Yoshi in this adaptation of the fan-favourite franchise.

Rayman Legends is fourth, with a fan score of 90 out of 100. This light-hearted game is known to be child-friendly, so is great for families to play together.

Fifth is Stardew Valley, with an average score of 88 out of 100 across all platforms. This is a perfect fit for committed couples, as you can even use in-game currency to make your characters buy a wedding ring and get married!

In sixth place is Vampire Survivors, with a fan score of 88 out of 100. This title was released in 2021 and is described as a new genre of first person shooter game that incorporates RPG elements – and is reportedly a great stress reliever.

Seventh is It Takes Two, also with an average score of 88 out of 100 across all platforms. In this high-stakes game, you can take on married characters trapped within two dolls, who must work together to escape.

Diablo IV is eighth, with a fan score of 87 out of 100. Players must work together as a team to defend the human race in this role-play sequel – and can even unlock pets as the levels progress.

At number nine is Cuphead, with an average score of 87 across platforms. Take on Cuphead and his brother Mugman and chase runaway casino debtors while enjoying the retro graphics inspired by classic 1930s ‘run and gun’ games.

Bang-on Balls: Chronicles places tenth, with a score of 86 out of 100. Players can unleash their inner children in this 3D world and work their way through missions.

Gabriele Asaro, Head of SEO and research of Clash.gg commented on the findings, saying: “Date nights don’t have to be overly expensive to be worth scheduling into the calendar - and with the recent weather conditions, we imagine lots of couples would prefer to stay home than go out.

“However, we know that some titles can instead cause frustration for couples due to a lack of co-op features or generally poor plot. This ranking works to highlight those that are actually worth spending time on – and it’ll be interesting to see how upcoming releases may dethrone Baldur’s Gate 3.”
