British Army Soldier in Serious Condition After Stabbing Near Kent Barracks

A British Army soldier is in the hospital with serious injuries following a stabbing incident near his home in Kent. 

The soldier, in his 40s, was in uniform when he was attacked just before 18:00 BST in Sally Port Gardens, Gillingham. The Home Office has stated that the incident is not being treated as terror-related but as a result of a mental health episode.

A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder approximately 25 minutes after the attack. Eyewitness accounts describe a harrowing scene. One woman, who lives near the location of the incident, recounted hearing a "huge scream" as she was sitting down to dinner with her family. When she looked out the window, she saw the attacker delivering a final stab wound to the soldier, who was on the ground, before fleeing the scene on a moped. "It's very, very scary," she said, reflecting the community's distress.

General Sir Roly Walker, head of the Army, expressed his sadness over what he described as a horrific and unprovoked attack. He confirmed that the victim is an officer in the Army. The Army released a statement expressing their sorrow and support for the soldier and his family, urging the public to respect their privacy during this difficult time.
