Moorfields Highwalk Reopens: Enhancing London's Pedway Network

A significant development has unfolded in the City of London, with the reopening of another section of the elevated walkways known as the pedways.

This latest reopening marks a milestone in the city's ongoing efforts to revitalize its pedestrian infrastructure.

Formerly connecting the Barbican estate with Moorgate tube station, the pedway had been closed due to construction work on the tube station entrance for the Elizabeth line and subsequent development of an over-site office block. However, with the completion of the replacement pedway, commuters and pedestrians can once again traverse this vital link in the city's pedestrian network.

One notable improvement is the addition of new escalators leading up to the elevated walkway near Moorgate station's new entrance. Unlike the previous escalators, which were enclosed in a rather gloomy space, the new escalators are open to the sky, creating a more welcoming atmosphere for pedestrians. While the design of the replacement pedway may be considered utilitarian compared to its dramatic predecessor, it serves its purpose effectively as a wide passageway suspended alongside the offices.

Although the aesthetics of the pedway may be modest, efforts have been made to enhance the surrounding environment. Planting along the sides of the walkway, if properly maintained, has the potential to grow into small screens, adding a touch of greenery to the urban landscape. Additionally, a courtyard space at the Barbican end of the pedway has been transformed with raised beds for a mix of planting and seating areas, providing a pleasant oasis for pedestrians.

Furthermore, the inclusion of a new staircase and lift at the Barbican end ensures accessibility for all, facilitating ease of movement between street level and the elevated walkway. These improvements contribute to the overall accessibility and functionality of the pedestrian infrastructure in the area.

However, challenges remain, as evidenced by encounters with security guards attempting to restrict photography near the escalators. While it is acknowledged that the pedway is a public right of way under Section 106 agreements, occasional disputes may arise. Nonetheless, the reopening of this vital pedestrian link signifies a positive step forward for the City of London and its ongoing efforts to enhance the pedestrian experience in the urban environment.

The reopening of Moorfields Highwalk represents a significant milestone in the revitalization of London's pedway network. While there may be room for improvement in terms of aesthetics and accessibility, the restoration of this key pedestrian route serves to enhance connectivity and promote a more pedestrian-friendly cityscape.
