Off lately I have been finding the mention of ‘entrepreneurship’ at every other article, talk, paper etc that I come across. Recently I read a post that said, “Everybody must learn to think entrepreneurially!” I so agree with that.
But what is 'entrepreneurship' after all? Where has this concept come from all of a sudden? Well, there are plenty of references to its origin available in different languages - French, Latin etc find it closest to the word in Sanskrit -Antra-Prerit ie. " Self - Inspired".
We live in a time in which we all need more than one source of income – and more importantly we need to chose a career that aligns with our passion so that we don’t take our job as a burden from 9 to 5– we can chose to give it time and energy as much as we want, beyond what is expected of us - we can bring SELF to it.
However, I also simultaneously find much hulla-gulla in the market on what you should write in your curriculum-vitae (CV) - which skills you should have to give your profile an edge, and what are the relevant keywords that you should mention in your CV to stand out in the crowd etc.
I feel that before we need to think entrepreneurially, we need to start “thinking” at least. How to think is a next step. Don’t just run in a race without taking a pause – exploring what you want – what you can excel at. There are hundreds of career lines that exist which we have never even tried, and thousands others that are yet to be created.
We need to stop doing things to make our CV look good, add certificates to maintain an average paying job, get stupid promotions, save on Sick or Casual Leaves etc. If you can financially afford, take a planned break from your work when you can think about your life path. Do not worry about number of leaves you have left in that financial year, or the time gap it will cause in your CV between two jobs. It’s okay to have a break period in which you are exploring rather than constantly running without a vision for yourself.
If you want to make a difference, take a small step. Are you 100% efficient in your current job? If you crib about your current job, is your own capability to handle the job pressure the reason or something else is? Do you like what you do? Do you know what you like? What will it take for you to know the answer of questions that you ask others all the time?
Seek mentors, don’t seek job references! Discover in the meantime what you want, and then go get it! And most importantly, take big decisions and be responsible for those decisions.
